In what he calls an exciting but bittersweet decision, Moore County Schools Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence today announced his acceptance of an offer to become the superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools in Virginia Beach, VA.

Spence is a native of Virginia Beach and said that played a major role in his decision. “I discussed this at length with my wife before accepting the position in Virginia Beach because Moore County is so important to us. Our children love their schools, and we have a strong bond with this community,” he said. “This decision was not easy, but in the end the opportunity to be closer to family was a strong pull, and we believe the right decision for us at this time.”  Spence’s father, mother and other family members still live in Virginia Beach.

Spence was named superintendent of Moore County Schools in December 2011. During his tenure, Moore County Schools has implemented several major new initiatives including a district wide digital learning initiative and the creation of an entrepreneurship program. In that same time, Moore County Schools’ EOG proficiency scores have risen from 43rd to 22nd in the state. “This is an incredibly committed and talented team of educators who care about making learning meaningful and special for every child, every day. I feel blessed to work with the Moore County Schools family, which makes this decision especially difficult,” said Spence.

Moore County Schools Board of Education Chair Kathy Farren said this is a loss for Moore County, but she and the board wish Dr. Spence and his family all the best. “Dr. Spence has brought a contagious energy and exciting student learning focus to Moore County,” Farren said. “We will continue building on the exciting things happening in Moore County because he has done a great job of collaborating with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the community.” She noted that Dr. Spence will continue to serve as superintendent of Moore County Schools until the end of the 2013-14 school year.
