Melvin Franklin “Mel” Berngartt, age 90, formerly of Seven Lakes, a resident of the Village of Brookwood, Burlington died Tuesday, March 3, at the Hospice Home after a period of declining health. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11:00 am Tuesday, March 24, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Graham and officiated by Rev. Briant Cullinane, OFM Conv.
Mr. Berngartt and his wife, Peggy, lived in Seven Lakes from 1993 to 2007.
Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Maurice Mark Berngartt and the late Sadye Samler Berngartt . He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Army Air Corps (WWII) as a radiosonde operator from February 1943 to January 1946. After returning home he completed his education at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business.
He became a Certified Public Accountant and spent most of his career years as a federal employee working for the General Accounting Office and was a Deputy Associate Director in their International Division upon his retirement.
While working for GAO he traveled to many foreign countries and had two long term overseas assignments accompanied by his family.
Mr. Berngartt, was a past member of the American Institute of CPA’s, the Maryland Association of CPA’s, and the Seven Lakes Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-four years, Margaret Williams “Peggy” Berngartt; son, Joseph Berngartt of Parma, OH; three daughters, Mary “Candy” McLendon and husband, Arthur, of Winston-Salem; Meg Olexik and husband, Chuck, of Cary; and Diane Anderson and husband, Steve, of Hillsborough; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
Inurnment will be at Salisbury National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends from 10 am – 10:45 am Tuesday morning prior to the service at the church.
