96, died on Wednesday, March 2, her wedding anniversary, at her home in Seven Lakes West. Services were held on Friday, March 4 at 11:00 am at the West End United Methodist Church.
She was born in Fork, SC to George Clinton and Janie Huggins Baker. Following graduation from high school, Vonadora was crowned Miss South Carolina in 1940. She later attended business school in Columbia, SC that prepared her for a long career with Burlington Industries, Hosiery Division as secretary to the plant manager.
While her husband served in World War II, Vonadora raised her children in Graham. She enjoyed gardening, church activities, and bridge club. Vonadora was an excellent cook known for her fried chicken, “greasy rice” and potato salad.
Vonadora was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Preston B. Stackhouse; one son Baker Stackhouse; two sisters; and two brothers.
She is survived by two children, Gayle McElroy and husband Glenn; Jimmy Stackhouse and wife Dena; four grandchildren, Paula McElroy and husband Harry Fanning; Shannon McElroy; Carrie Barber and husband Lance; Preston Stackhouse and wife Lora. She is also survived by three great grandchildren, Sean Iannantuono and Raylan and Wade Barber.
Vonadora attended West End United Methodist Church after she retired to Seven Lakes in 1983 to be closer to her son and grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Vonadora’s caretakers, Rosemary McDonald and Emlett Sellers, as well as First Health Hospice for their support and loving care during her decline.
